Learning Objectives May Inhibit Authentic Learning

Three ways that posted learning objective can inhibit authentic learning.

  1. Communicating objectives to students defines the roles of teachers as givers of information and students as receivers of information (sage on the stage vs guide on the side).
  2. Communicating objectives to students may discourage students and teachers from pursuing potentially constructive lines of inquiry that appear tangential to the objectives.
  3. Learning objectives give away the ending before the discovering even begins.
